How do the “web crawlers” operate?

Before showing results, the search engines conduct three main steps:

  • Crawling

Crawling is done through the so-called “spiders” of search portals such as Google, Yandex, Yahoo, Bing, and others. The spiders are programs that search for information on websites and their adjacent pages.

  • Indexing

When the “spiders” discover content on a webpage, they save it to a database (the process of web indexing). Once that content is cataloged, it can be now shown by the search portal when the consumer enters a word or a phrase.

  • Ranking

Any search engine operates with algorithms that monitor tens of parameters. Thus they classify website content to a certain place among the results. Good optimization also leads to better SERP performance. In other words, the better your website optimization is, the bigger the probability of your content to appear at the first Results page, or even at the top of the internet searches.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Simply put, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a marketing process of increasing the quality and quantity of visitors to a website through better visibility of its pages (better classification of the website compared to its competitors) in the organic results (the traffic the website would aggregate without paying for advertising) of search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, and others.

How does Search Engine Optimization (SEO) work?

There are two main types of optimization:

On-page SEO (internal optimization)

As the name suggests, these are the parameters related to a particular website and all of its elements:

  • Content
  • URLs
  • Meta data and its description
  • Internal hyperlinks (the links that redirect users to other pages within the website)
  • Website architecture and so on.

The internal optimization (On-page SEO) is the first step. Some of the parameters do not have such a big influence on the website’s SEO. Nevertheless, there are others that are critical for its optimization, hence for its rank in search portals.

Off-page SEO (external optimization)

The external optimization relates to gaining links from external websites (backlinks). It’s important to note that the higher the rank of the website that “quotes” you, the better you would score with the search engines. But keep in mind that a website that’s been punished, or has a really low rating, can influence your website in a negative way (one of the “Black hat SEO” practices). The Off-page SEO also includes internal steps such as:

  • Marketing on social media (Social media marketing);
  • Blog;
  • Influencer marketing, and others.

What other benefits of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can you get?

In addition to the positive impact of the SEO described above, there are other benefits from conducting such optimization:

  • Brand recognition – websites appearing on the first page, or even among the top results, are seen by thousands of customers. The constant presence of your website (and its pages) among the highest-ranked will drastically improve the recognition of the brand you’re developing;
  • Building trust in your brand – consumers trust in the search engines and their suggestions, as well as in the websites appearing on the first place of the SERP.
  • More backlinks – the probability for other website administrators to “quote” you (a reference) in their content is much higher if your website is positioned among the top results on the SERP.
